The first portrait threatens to become very famous, as an iconic image of the purposefully receding male. I think of Peckinpah's fantastic shot of William Holden in "The Wild Bunch," as he rides off, up a rising dune at the end of what we may call, a rough day. As he is framed here, the figure embodies a great deal of that character, as it is at that age. I love the picture.
